Raw materials

The four different plant fibres used to make our Natural Base floorcoverings and rugs really are raw. They retain their natural look and feel despite the spinning and dying processes.

From the lustrous sheen of sisal, to smooth-but-chunky seagrass, from wiry coir to the softness of jute, these materials make a strong statement and add interesting texture to any space.
Sisal plant

Sisal

Sisal is made from the Agave Sisalana plant. The plants are grown in only a few countries around the world. Our sisal comes from Africa and is finer, longer and cleaner than sisal grown elsewhere in the world. This gives our sisal carpets a brighter colour, cleaner surface, less irregularities and less contamination than other sisal floorcoverings. Unlike some other natural products, sisal can be dyed, meaning that you can enjoy unusual and hardwearing texture in your home in both a range of styles and a variety of colours. Sisal is a plant fibre so it’s 100% natural and is also a totally renewable source, as well as being 100% biodegradable and therefore very environmentally friendly.
Seagrass

Seagrass

Seagrass has an irresistible rustic simplicity. The chunky yarn has a slight sheen that creates well-defined patterns, making a strong statement, while the neutral colour palette makes it very easy to live with.

Seagrass originates from the paddy fields of China which are flooded by sea water. After harvesting and drying, the seagrass is spun into a strong yarn and with its practical and versatile qualities, it is ideal for weaving into a hardwearing floorcovering. Seagrass comes in its natural green and brown hues, and brings a real sense of nature into your home. As with all such natural products, seagrass floorcoverings will subtly change colour as they age, it’s all part of the charm of these floorcoverings.
Coir

Coir

Coir is derived from the husk of the coconut shell. Coir, which is produced in India, contains fibres which make it extremely strong and has a natural, high abrasion resistance, making it an ideal product for weaving. It’s great for busy areas with its rough wiry texture it catches dirt and is very hardwearing. However, with the distinct weave designs it’s a far cry from traditional coir mats.

Jute

Jute is derived from the stalk of the Corchorus plant grown in Bangladesh and is the softest of the natural plant fibres. More shiny than other vegetable fibres, jute has a natural tweedy
quality. Our Pimlico design combines sisal, wool and jute to make an incredibly tactile yet practical floorcovering.
